Transition Management and Interim Management
are two different types of mission

Transition Management

A Transition Manager generally intervenes because of the absolute urgency in modifying the strategies implemented within a company in greater or lesser depth.

A Transition Manager is responsible for modifying, even turning around completely, the company with which they are entrusted.

Who mandates a Transition Manager?

A Transition Manager is generally mandated by banks, investors or by the board of directors of a company or structure to carry out a new stage in its general strategy when there is a serious problem to be resolved quickly.

Why should companies choose a Transition Manager from outside the business to effect change?

Because the Transition Manager can act without fear or favour and so be objective at all levels of a company which is not his or her own, in which they have no investment, have not recruited staff, have not developed the products it sells and for which it has not defined the markets it exploits. The Transition Manager can reform all the segments that require it without any risk of calling into question their own initial options.

This is also why a Transition Manager’s mission must be a short one (never longer than 18 months in our opinion).

In practical terms, what does a Transition Management mission involve?

The client and the Transition Manager sign a contract that must be accompanied by a mission statement describing the situation as seen by the client and which summarises their expectations.

After a generally short period which is defined in the contract, the Transition Manager presents their findings on the company to the client along with the solutions and timetable for the actions they plan to implement to remedy the difficulties encountered.

The Transition Manager is obliged to report periodically to the client on how the company’s situation is developing.

In the vast majority of cases, the Transition Manager recruits and trains the manager who will take over from them in the long term once their mission is complete.
